The Penny Loafer is a unisex style of slip-on shoe that can trace its origins back to the 1930’s, originally warn by Norwegian farmers as a comfortable and smart shoe.  

They get the name ‘Penny’ from the cosmetic strap that sits on top of the shoe, which features a small slit that’s the perfect size to hold a coin. Looking back a few decades before the advent of mobile phones, using payphones was the norm and many young adults would keep money in their shoes in case they needed to make an emergency call. With this mindset, it’s believed that Americans adapted their loafers with a silver coin to make a statement, the popularity of which gave birth to the ‘Penny Loafer’ as we know it today.  

Key feathers of a Penny Loafer:  

  • Moccasin- Styled shoes (with a diamond shaped cut out at the top) 
  • Worn with added tassels, (or other embellishments.)
